ACT Greens demand free soft-plastics recycling for Canberra residents
Jo Clay says Canberra has no free, easy way to recycle soft plastics despite a new facility.
The ACT Greens say Canberra has no free, easy option to recycle soft plastics. A new Materials Recovery Facility is being built at Hume, but it won't take soft plastics.
ACT Greens leader Jo Clay says the government needs a plan that doesn't make residents pay. Several other Australian areas already offer free soft-plastics pick-up at home: Albury, Ballarat, Tamworth, the Central Coast and some Adelaide suburbs.
Right now, Canberrans can use paid options like RecycleSmart door-to-door service or Terracycle mail-back programs. Some Woolworths stores take clean soft plastics, but only those with specific labels.
Clay says with people struggling to pay bills, this is a service government should offer free.

Why it mattersWithout a free public option, many residents will throw soft plastics in landfill rather than pay private recycling fees.
AustraliaPuts pressure on ACT Government to match other Australian cities and provide free soft-plastics recycling as standard.
