Supplement makers hide doses to push multiple products, stars warn
Duncan Armstrong and Guy Leech warn that hidden supplement doses push older Australians to buy more products.
Olympic medallist Duncan Armstrong and Ironman star Guy Leech warn Australia's supplement industry confuses older consumers. Armstrong and Leech say makers hide the exact amounts in their ingredient blends, pushing people to buy more products.
"Why would a company selling you 10 bottles make one product that replaces all 10?" Leech asked.
Seven in ten Australians use supplements each year. Four in ten take them daily.
Older Australians use them most. People aged 75 and over are more than twice as likely to take supplements as those aged 18 to 29.
In aged care homes, 78 per cent of residents use supplements and 41 per cent use two or more. Armstrong warns that supplements can dangerously mix with other medicines.
