Hawthorn doesn't need Zach Merrett's big disposal numbers to win a flag
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell says new recruit Zach Merrett should prioritise team success over racking up high disposal numbers.
Hawthorn has told Zach Merrett the former Essendon captain can put up smaller numbers and still thrive in their system. Coach Sam Mitchell said they value team success above individual statistics.
Merrett, 31, spent his entire career chasing big disposal tallies at Essendon but never tasted a premiership. Merrett finally moved to Hawthorn this trade period after a failed attempt a year ago.
The Hawks also recruited forward Ben King from Gold Coast. Hawthorn lost last year's preliminary final to Brisbane.
Mitchell said Merrett is firmly focused on winning a flag. The Hawks have made the last two preliminary finals and are among the top premiership favourites next year.
They also announced a 10-year sponsorship deal with car maker BYD.
