James Packer to testify in Netanyahu corruption trial

Australian billionaire James Packer has been called to testify at Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trial. The trial involves payments to his defence lawyers.

Packer's company, Consolidated Press International, allegedly sent at least 1.78 million dollars to Hadad Roth Shenhar law firm over two years. The first payment was made in September 2024.

Over $71,000 was sent each month. Netanyahu's defence lawyers say the firm worked for companies controlled by Packer on other matters.

However, if the payments directly or indirectly benefited the prime minister, he could face fresh charges. Packer initially did not want to travel to Israel but agreed to appear remotely via video link.

Ben Tilley and Guy Jalland are Packer's associates who went with him to Israel between 2013 and 2016. They will also testify.

There is no evidence Netanyahu received any benefit from the payments. Packer and Netanyahu were neighbours in luxury villas in Caesarea.

They grew apart in 2016 when corruption allegations emerged. The pair reunited in 2024 when Packer attended Netanyahu's speeches to the US Congress and the UN.
