Canberra has 460 broken streetlights, oldest unfixed since 2022
Canberra's 460 broken streetlights have been dark for at least 90 days, with one unfixed since October 2022.
Canberra residents report feeling unsafe as 460 streetlights have sat dark for more than 90 days. Repairs have been delayed for up to nearly four years.
The ACT Government revealed the backlog during parliamentary estimates this month. Shadow Minister Peter Cain said residents contact him about danger and crime in unlit streets.
They report cars and properties being broken into while streets are left in darkness. The government said complex faults take time to look into.
Many involve underground cabling, pole work and traffic management. The 460 broken lights represent about 0.55 per cent of Canberra's 83,000 streetlights.
Evoenergy, the electricity provider, said the ACT Government is responsible for maintenance and repair. The government said it is working through the queue of faults.
