Lord Mayor rejects $22m bus lane as disguised road-widening
Lord Mayor rejects $22 million bus lane after traffic data shows northbound buses need help more.
Transport for NSW proposes changing a southbound lane on Botany Road in Waterloo to a bus lane. This would happen during morning peak hours from 6am to 10am.
The $22 million plan includes widening lanes at McEvoy Street. Internal traffic data shows northbound buses suffer 6 per cent delays in the morning peak.
Southbound buses face only 3 per cent delays. Lord Mayor Moore said the money and tree canopy damage are not justified for minimal public transport gain.
Transport advocates and urban planners say the plan adds car capacity near Waterloo Metro and Green Square. This goes against the city's own transport strategy.
