Corrimal lot faces first development bid after a century of vacancy
A Princes Highway lot empty since 1839 faces development proposals for two homes.
A block of land on Princes Highway in Corrimal has remained vacant for more than a century since the suburb was named in 1839. Aerial photos show nothing on the block since 1938, suggesting it has never been developed.
Wollongong City Council rejected multiple proposals over the decades: shops in 1965, a car yard in 1967, a carport in 1976, and a funeral home in 2005. Now developer Meraki Design has lodged plans to build two-storey homes on the site and the neighbouring lot.
The block faces environmental challenges: asbestos in old rubble and lead in the soil from decades of vehicle maintenance. The developer has designed the homes on raised platforms to manage flood risk.
Public exhibition ends 25 November.
