Perth CBD locked down for international weapons expo

Nearly 1,000 organisations from 60 countries are exhibiting amid heavy police presence and street closures.

The Land Forces Exhibition is opening today at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Parts of the CBD are closed and strict security is set up.

Nearly 1,000 organisations from 60 countries are showing weapons and defence industry exhibits. Police have Mounts Bay Road closed and parking shut down through Thursday.

Officers were given special powers to keep the peace. This follows violent protests against the same expo in Melbourne two years ago.

Around 12 people have been excluded from attending. A peaceful anti-war protest is planned for this afternoon.

People will march from Yagan Square to Elizabeth Quay.
