Illowa intersection gets $20m safety upgrade
Labor will spend $20 million to fix two Princes Highway intersections at Illowa after years of crashes.
A roundabout will replace the dangerous Southern Cross Road and Princes Highway intersection in south-west Victoria, under Labor's election promise. The second upgrade at Lake View Road will strengthen the pavement and improve markings.
The Princes Highway projects are part of a $893 million road investment announced Thursday across Victoria, with 19 of 25 roads in regional areas. The Illowa section of the Princes Highway has long been a safety concern for residents after multiple crashes.
Ben Carroll's Labor government is already fixing 500,000 potholes and upgrading 50 local roads. The Princes Highway is described as the backbone of the south-west, carrying locals, tourists and freight to Warrnambool and beyond.
South West Victoria Alliance welcomed the investment but said the region still needs sustained, long-term funding to address broader road damage.
