Friends cast skip Matthew Perry Netflix documentary on his life
Netflix's new three-part Matthew Perry series excludes all five of his Friends co-stars and glosses over darker aspects of his life.
Netflix released a three-part documentary called The One About Matthew Perry about the Friends star who died of a drug overdose in 2023 at age 54. The series is directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson and focuses on Perry's childhood and early life, mostly told by his half-sister and two long-time friends.
Notably absent are all five of Perry's Friends co-stars: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc. The documentary treats Perry as complex but provides little depth.
It waits past two hours before mentioning anything negative about him. Perry's addiction is attributed mainly to opioid painkillers from a jetski accident, though his depression goes largely unexamined until the final episode.

Why it mattersAuthorised documentaries with exclusive family access typically avoid critical examination. This one offers little new insight beyond Perry's own memoir.
AustraliaAustralian Netflix subscribers can now watch the series, though reviewers suggest it works best for casual fans rather than those seeking honest depth.
