A-League season back on track after referee strike deal agreed
A deal between referees and Australian football authorities ends a strike. That strike threatened to delay the A-League season starting October 17.
The A-League can start on time. A deal resolved a referee strike that began in early September.
About 100 of Australia's top football officials had refused appointments during the dispute with the Professional Football Referees Association. The agreement means referees will be employed by the governing bodies and APL to cover A-League fixtures.
Auckland FC chief executive Nick Becker said the resolution meant his side could begin its title defence without delay. "There's a small union problem that's been fixed now," Becker said.
Captain Hiroki Sakai, 36, said he was excited the season was starting. Sakai also said Auckland FC had worked with Auckland Transport to offer free travel to fans for all 13 home games.
This saves families up to $40 per match.
