US and Iran hold first talks in four months at UN gathering
US and Iran held shuttle talks for the first time since July, mediated by Qatar at the UN General Assembly.
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner communicated with Iranian mediators on Wednesday at the UN General Assembly in New York. The envoys did not meet face-to-face.
The contact was the first between the adversaries since an interim ceasefire agreement collapsed in July. President Trump said the meeting was productive.
He said momentum existed for a deal. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met Qatar's prime minister.
Qatar is one of the main mediators in past negotiations. Iran said it conveyed conditions.
These include an end to the war and a halt to US aggression. The diplomatic opening helped push oil prices down.
Brent crude held near two-week lows. The war has lasted nearly seven months and killed thousands.
