Up to 30 ibises found dead at Carrington boardwalk, cause unknown
About 30 dead ibises were found at Carrington mangrove boardwalk; decomposition prevented testing for bird flu.
A large number of dead ibises appeared at the Carrington mangrove boardwalk near Newcastle last week, with no clear explanation. The actual count could have been as high as 30.
The NSW Department of Primary Industries confirmed it is aware of reports but could not test for H5 avian influenza because of advanced decomposition. The public has been warned not to handle several sick or dead birds.
The latest advice shows 75 bird flu events have been recorded in the state, with the most recent confirmed in an Australian raven at Swansea Heads, Lake Macquarie. Three cases were detected at Stockton Beach in September.
While the risk to human health remains low, local wildlife volunteers have called for more support and equipment to handle potential bird flu cases.
