Dangerous supercells forecast for Queensland and NSW after 10cm hail overnight

Supercell thunderstorms with destructive winds over 125 kilometres an hour and giant hail are forecast across parts of Queensland and NSW after 10cm hailstones fell overnight.

A trough over southern inland Queensland triggered heavy storms overnight, with hail banking up across roads around Maryborough. The Bureau of Meteorology says the atmosphere remains highly unstable and a significant storm day is expected from the NSW south coast to Queensland's Fraser Coast.

Supercells could develop across northeast NSW and southeast and central Queensland. Destructive wind gusts over 125 kilometres an hour, giant hail and flash flooding are all possible.

Heavy rainfall is also expected across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Darling Downs and the Sunshine Coast.
