Stinger Glass fails scan; Melham gets chance to defend title

A horse fails pre-race scan, clearing the way for last year's winning jockey to defend her title.

Stinger Glass, the Japanese-trained contender for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup, has been scratched after vets deemed him at high risk of injury. The six-year-old failed a mandatory pre-race scan on Thursday, ending his campaign despite a last-ditch effort to prove his fitness through additional testing.

The withdrawal clears the way for Jamie Melham, who won the Melbourne Cup last year, to defend her title on Future History, which moves into Stinger Glass's place. Stinger Glass is the second horse ruled out by veterinarians before the race, following Saint George's withdrawal on Thursday.

Just five runners remain awaiting final veterinary clearance to confirm their starts.

Why it mattersVeterinary withdrawals reshape betting odds and jockey opportunities in the world's richest handicap horse race, decided days before the event.

AustraliaThe Melbourne Cup is Australia's most famous horse race, and injuries to leading contenders shift the likely winners and change which Australian jockeys get to ride.
