De Minaur edges closer to ATP Finals spot after Vienna quarter-final win

De Minaur's shot at a third consecutive ATP Finals spot improved after Vienna progress and rival injuries.

De Minaur beat Learner Tien in Vienna and will face Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals, chasing a third consecutive spot at the ATP Finals in Turin. De Minaur started the week ranked tenth, needing a top-eight finish; his odds improved after world No. 2 Jannik Sinner withdrew with injury and sixth-ranked Flavio Cobolli retired mid-match.

A victory over Berrettini would push de Minaur into ninth in the live rankings and put him firmly in contention. Meanwhile, top seed Alexander Zverev won through in Vienna, confirming his rise to world No. 1 when rankings update Monday.

Zverev becomes the second German after Boris Becker to reach the top spot. The two could meet in Vienna's semi-finals if both advance.
