Minns orders review of Adamstown gates delays
Minns calls for a review of sequencing, signalling and traffic light issues at Adamstown crossing.
Premier Chris Minns has ordered a review of the Adamstown railway crossing after Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp spoke to him at length about the gridlock. Motorists text Crakanthorp when gates come down and remain stuck for minutes waiting for them to reopen.
Minns said the review will examine some sequencing issues, such as a long coal train followed closely by a local service, plus whether the traffic lights help or hurt. Electronic warning signs will soon alert drivers to avoid the crossing when slow trains approach.
The long-term fix, a 30-kilometre freight bypass between Fassifern and Hexham, will cost over a billion dollars and is years away.

Why it mattersNewcastle commuters waste time and fuel at the crossing daily. Quick fixes could ease congestion while the expensive bypass waits for funding.
AustraliaNewcastle drivers stuck at Adamstown gates may see faster crossings if sequencing or signal tweaks work. The bypass remains unfunded but could feature in the state election campaign.
