Bendigo man avoids jail for $120k theft after showing remorse to court

Dylan Wilson pleaded guilty to stealing about $120,000 in goods and a ute from a Bendigo plant and setting it alight.

Wilson and his co-accused cut through a wire fence at the Bendigo-Mallon Road property on February 10, 2024. They forced into an office and took $80,000 worth of tools.

The pair drove the stolen ute to Ravenswood, then panicked when seen and set the vehicle on fire before fleeing. Police found Wilson hours later walking on the Calder Freeway.

Wilson told officers he was coerced and regretted his actions, saying "I stuffed up. I didn't want to do this."

His lawyer cited Wilson's background of foster care, abuse and family violence. The magistrate said Wilson had a difficult past but is still young, and sentenced him to an 18-month community corrections order with 70 hours of community work and treatment for drug use and mental health.
