Man loses precious photos after his phone is smashed in RSL toilet

Jesse Meehan, 21, fined after smashing a man's phone in a disabled toilet at Wangaratta RSL, destroying irreplaceable family photos.

A court heard today that Jesse Meehan, 21, smashed a man's phone at Wangaratta RSL after taking it into a disabled toilet while drunk. The victim lost irreplaceable photographs of his son's childhood.

Meehan asked for the phone from a poker machine and took it into the toilet, where it was smashed. Meehan was so drunk he could not remember his actions.

Magistrate Ian Watkins fined Meehan $300 restitution for the phone and ordered him to pay another $300 to the Wangaratta CFA. A 12-month good behaviour bond was also imposed.

Watkins said he was alarmed by Meehan's drinking to the point of not remembering his offence. Many young people receive long jail sentences for similar drunken acts they cannot recall, he warned.
