Wollongong man sentenced for assault and arson at his own unit
Anthony Rowntree, 43, was sentenced to three years four months for punching a neighbour and burning his own apartment.
Anthony Rowntree was sentenced in Wollongong District Court for assault and arson. The 43-year-old punched his victim unprovoked in the face with a closed fist after confronting him about a break-in at Crown Street in West Wollongong on May 13, 2024.
The victim fled with a fractured eye socket and facial bruising. When police arrived, Rowntree poured accelerant inside the apartment and started a fire.
He barricaded the door to stop officers from entering. Rowntree escaped via the balcony and struggled with police during arrest.
Damage to the Department of Housing unit was estimated at $82,000. Judge Imad Abdul-Karim accepted the fire was not planned but part of an attempt at self-harm.
Rowntree also pleaded guilty to sexually touching a woman without consent. He is eligible for parole in mid-October 2026.
