Bail denied for man charged with child sexual abuse
A 35-year-old Wendouree man was denied bail a second time. He faces child sexual abuse charges in Ballarat Magistrates' Court.
Dion Howlett, 35, applied for bail on October 2 after being charged with child sexual abuse crimes. Howlett's partner's family offered $10,000 to secure his release, but the magistrate refused.
Police say in December 2025, Howlett supplied alcohol to a child and trapped her in a bedroom. Howlett removed her clothing, took photos, and sexually assaulted her.
Investigators found many images of child abuse material on his devices. A defence lawyer said the case was weak, but the magistrate noted the charges were very serious with multiple aggravating features.
Howlett remains in custody and will return to court later.
