Mama Kin Spender's album gives voice to empty-nest years
Mama Kin Spender's album Promises captures overlooked life stages of long-term marriage.
Danielle Caruana, performing as Mama Kin Spender, grew tired of radio songs about broken-hearted 20-year-olds. Caruana and musical partner Dingo Spender wrote an album about what comes after: the shift when children leave home.
The result was Promises, raw and honest about long marriage, empty nests, and the gap between staying together and staying in love. The album struck a nerve with listeners hungry for songs about their own lives.
Caruana now performs the Singing Roadshow at Dashville Skyline. It is a mix of concert and community choir.
Anyone, trained singer or not, can join in. Caruana believes singing together breaks down the social division plaguing Australian communities.
