Firefighters forced to watch Sydney substation burn unchecked
Firefighters couldn't fight the Sydney substation fire because it would cut power to hundreds of thousands of homes.
A high-voltage coil system at Sydney's Mason Park switching station caught fire around 2:15am Friday. Firefighters were unable to fight the fire.
Putting it out would require shutting down the station and cutting power to hundreds of thousands of homes. AusGrid said the fire burned out under controlled conditions.
This was necessary because of dangers from the electrical equipment. By 7:30am the fire was beginning to smoulder.
The cause is not yet known and will be investigated once it is safe to access. Customer electricity supply was not affected during the incident.
