Tech billionaire resurrects Canberra's iconic Milk Race after childhood dreams
Tech billionaire Greg Boorer nearly died at 19. He is now bringing back Canberra's iconic Milk Race cycling event.
Greg Boorer wanted to be a pro cyclist. A garbage truck with its grabbing arm out hit him and a friend at 100kmh.
They were riding at 50kmh on a Central Coast freeway. He spent three months in the hospital recovering from a separated shoulder that never fully healed.
This ended his cycling ambitions but pushed him toward university and a business degree. As a teenager, he rode in the Tour of Canberra, known as the Milk Race.
This sparked his love of the capital. He built CDC Data Centres into a $17 billion company.
He worked as a mechanic for Australian Olympic and World Championship cycling teams. Now he is bringing the race back.
It starts February 26 to 28, 2027. The stages include a Black Mountain time trial and city criteriums.
There is also a National Triangle circuit road race and a Stromlo Forest Park queen stage.
