Remains found in bush near George Town during search for missing man

Skeletal remains were found in bushland near George Town. A volunteer search group discovered them while looking for missing 58-year-old Michael Vrankovic.

Volunteer searchers found human remains in bushland near George Town, Tasmania, on Friday. They were looking for Michael Vrankovic.

The 58-year-old went missing in January. The remains were found between South Street and Gerzalia Drive.

They were visible from nearby homes. A Find Our Lost Loved Ones (FOLLO) volunteer found the skeletal remains.

The bones showed signs of fire damage. Personal items including shoes were found at the scene.

Police say official identification will take several weeks. Vrankovic was last seen on January 13.

Police believe he was near Mt George based on mobile phone signals. Police and SES searched the area without success in January.

He was listed on the national missing persons database in April. FOLLO was founded by people involved in the search for Belgian backpacker Celine Cremer.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
