Ukrainian Greens slam Shoebridge's military aid stance as unrealistic
Ukraine's Greens party attacked David Shoebridge's position on military aid, saying it gives Russia a veto.
The Ukrainian Greens have publicly criticised the Greens leader over his stance on military aid to Ukraine. They called his position "detached from reality".
Shoebridge said this month he would not support helping Ukraine fight Russia without UN Security Council approval. Russia, as a permanent UNSC member, holds veto power over any such resolution.
Ukraine's Greens said his demand "plays into the hands of the aggressor, Vladimir Putin" and branded it "dogmatic pacifism". The party noted that Russia has killed more than 15,000 civilians since invading in 2022.
The party warned that "pacifism in the face of a ruthless invader leads to occupation and destruction". Labor senator Deborah O'Neill, who chairs the Parliamentary Friends of Ukraine, said Shoebridge had unilaterally changed party policy to "effectively abandon Ukraine".
Australia has supplied battle tanks, almost $1.9 billion in aid, and trained Ukrainian troops.
