Chad Schofield wins $20 million Everest on debut, stunning favored Ka Ying
Debutant jockey Chad Schofield rode Tempted to victory in the $20 million Everest, beating heavily favoured Ka Ying Rising by a head.
Chad Schofield has achieved one of Australian racing's greatest upsets in his Everest debut, riding Tempted to victory at Randwick. The horse won the $20 million sprint by about a head over Ka Ying Rising, which started as the heavy favourite at $1.35 after receiving 70 per cent of all betting money.
Tempted, at $7, led by two lengths with 200 metres to go but faded in the final stretch before just holding on. Schofield said he knew he had to ride aggressively from the start rather than wait for a late charge.
Trainer Ciaron Maher was emotional, praising both horse and rider for a phenomenal performance.
