Horse euthanized after fall in Caulfield Cup sparks safety inquiry
Ohope Wins was euthanized after a fall in the Caulfield Cup as debate over racing deaths flares.
The horse Ohope Wins fell in the finishing straight after being brought down by last year's winner Half Yours. Mark Zahra and Jye McNeil were taken to hospital for observation but released without serious injury.
Racing Victoria has ordered an inquiry. Animal welfare campaigners say the racing industry must be made more accountable for track deaths.
The Coalition for the Protection of Horses campaign director Elio Celotto says at least 160 horses have been killed in Australian racing in 2026 from injuries sustained in racing. Top trainer Peter Moody defended the industry, saying Racing Victoria now requires all international horses for major races to have CT scans of their lower limbs before they are allowed to start.
