Two arrested after Greenpeace activists occupy Woodside gas platform
Two Greenpeace activists were arrested. They occupied an offshore Woodside platform 200km off Western Australia. They were protesting the Scarborough gas project.
Greenpeace activists climbed a Woodside gas platform on Saturday to protest. The activists opposed plans for a new gas project at Scott Reef.
Scott Reef is Australia's largest standalone oceanic reef. Four protesters went to the rig.
Two set up temporary hanging tents to occupy it overnight. They wanted to disrupt operations.
On Sunday, a helicopter with special police landed on the platform. The two activists were taken into custody by early afternoon.
They first removed themselves safely from their equipment. Woodside confirmed the protest disrupted start-up activities.
The company suspended operations under routine safety procedures. The company said the activists risked their own safety.
They also risked the safety of Woodside staff. Greenpeace says new fossil fuel extraction cannot be defended.
This is especially true at an extraordinary ecological site.
