Houthis strike Aden palace, killing five

The Houthis fired missiles at Yemen's presidential palace complex in Aden. Five people were killed and 16 were hurt.

Yemen's Houthis fired missiles at the presidential palace complex in Aden. The attack killed five people, according to the government.

At least 16 others were hurt. The attack was the first direct strike on al-Maashiq palace during the current phase of Yemen's conflict.

The conflict restarted last month. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group hit what he called a Saudi military operations headquarters.

Government officials said the prime minister and cabinet were safe. The Houthis have also launched ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi airports and oil facilities.

In recent weeks, these attacks have killed dozens.

Why it mattersThe growing conflict threatens regional stability and stops global shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

AustraliaNo direct Australian effect yet. If Houthi attacks continue to disrupt shipping lanes or Saudi Arabia, costs could flow through to Australian importers and exporters relying on Red Sea routes.
