Hanson-Young asks regulators to stop US execution livestream in Australia
The US will execute Nidal Malik Hasan on 3 December. Hegseth says it will be public and online.
US defence secretary Pete Hegseth said the US government will execute Nidal Malik Hasan on 3 December. Hasan is a former US Army major.
In 2009, he killed 13 people in a shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. Hegseth also said the execution would be in public and available to watch online.
It would be the first execution by military firing squad in the US since World War Two. It would also be the first execution in US history to be broadcast live.
Trump approved the plan. But a government spokesperson said Trump had indicated his final decision has not been made.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has written to the eSafety commissioner and communications minister. She asked them to stop any livestreams and to fine platforms that fail to block them.
Opposition treasury spokesperson Tim Wilson found the livestream prospect enormously problematic. But he had concerns about censorship.
