Public firing squad planned for Nidal Hasan on December 3

Trump backed the plan. It would be the first ever broadcast execution in US history.

Nidal Hasan is a former US Army officer. In 2009, he shot dead 13 unarmed soldiers.

Hegseth vowed last week that Hasan would face a firing squad on December 3. Hegseth said the execution would be public, so people could watch it.

He said people need to understand there are serious consequences. President Donald Trump said at the weekend that he backed the idea.

Amnesty International Australia said live streaming the execution showed an appalling disregard for human dignity. Amnesty asked the Albanese government to raise its concerns directly with the United States.

The Greens want federal authorities to stop the execution being broadcast in Australia. Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young urged Communications Minister Anika Wells to warn YouTube, TikTok and Meta.

Crossbencher Ralph Babet has pledged to share footage of the execution on social media.
