Floriade maintenance workers strike from Tuesday over pay

Ten ACT government workers maintaining Floriade are taking industrial action, leaving some daily upkeep undone while the festival runs until October 11.

The workers keep Commonwealth Park tidy between visitor crowds at Canberra's major springtime event. From Tuesday, they will stop routine work like clearing debris from ponds and paths.

Dangerous items such as syringes and broken glass will still be removed. The workers belong to the CFMEU union and have been pushing a pay claim.

About 60 ACT workers across the territory are involved in wider action. The union says these are some of the government's lowest-paid staff, yet Floriade contributes more than $71.5 million to the ACT economy.
