Launceston farewells Don Wing, civic pillar, at 88
Don Wing served as Launceston mayor and independent MLC for 30 years. He died at 88 after a lifetime of volunteer work.
Donald George Wing, a pillar of Launceston's community, has died at 88. Don Wing served as mayor from 1983 to 1987 and represented Launceston as an independent in parliament for three decades.
Wing became president of the Legislative Council from 2002 to 2008. Since the 1960s, Wing volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Lions Club.
He also worked on tram restoration and street beautification. Wing supported the Good Neighbour Council, Launceston City Band, Tamar Yacht Club, Launceston Male Choir, and YMCA.
Wing chose independence over party politics. He rejected the 'dog-eat-dog' world where politicians traded loyalty for promotion.
