Magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolts Victoria, largest in three years
A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Korumburra at 2am Saturday with dozens of aftershocks already recorded.
The strongest quake to hit Victoria in three years woke sleepers across the state early Saturday morning. Geoscience Australia recorded the magnitude 4.8 tremor at 2am.
The epicentre was six kilometres north-east of Korumburra, about 103 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. The tremor had a depth of ten kilometres.
More than 16,000 people reported feeling it. Seismology Research Centre chief scientist Adam Pascale recorded dozens of aftershocks.
The largest hit magnitude 3.1 just before 3am. He warned the activity will probably continue for weeks.
There is potential for another similar or larger quake in the coming days or weeks. The Victoria State Emergency Service confirmed the tremor and alerted crews.
It has received no requests for help and no building damage has been reported.
