Illawarra police honour nine officers and one student who died on the job
Nine police officers and one student officer died on the job in Illawarra. A National Police Remembrance Day service honors them.
Police across Illawarra gather this morning to remember nine officers and one student officer who gave their lives on the job. The service is at St Michael's Anglican Cathedral in Wollongong and starts at 10am on National Police Remembrance Day.
Constable Peter Carter died most recently, in 1988, when he was killed during a pursuit and his motorcycle left the road and hit a light pole. The 1960s were hardest hit, with three officers dying in crashes or while on duty.
Four days before this memorial, Constable Mia Lay, 20, died instantly in a crash. A police vehicle she was in hit a tree in Redfern, Sydney.
The list includes officers from pursuit accidents, traffic control incidents, and duty-related causes stretching back to 1951.
