Tar Malarath opens Warrnambool restaurant after 15 years building his dream
Tar Malarath, who arrived to study engineering 15 years ago, has opened Madala 134 after a decade working in kitchens.
Tar arrived in Australia 15 years ago to study electronic engineering but a part-time kitchen job inspired him to pursue hospitality instead. Tar worked at Alexo Pizza in Port Fairy for the past decade before buying Madala 134 on Liebig Street with his wife Pim.
Pim, whom he met at university in Thailand, had to return home when they were expecting their first child due to visa uncertainty. While there, she opened a coffee shop in her hometown near Chiang Rai, known for its coffee.
Pim returned to Australia and their second child was born here. Tar became an Australian citizen a month ago.
Pim is expected to become a citizen soon. The couple have updated the restaurant's menu and now offer lunch (11:30am-2:30pm) and dinner (4:30pm-9pm) Monday to Saturday.
They close Sundays for family time.
