Cole Nicholls jailed after theft spree he did to prove he could
Cole Nicholls admitted to stealing $4,065 in workwear and designer clothing before surrendering to police with three duffel bags.
Nicholls began his crime spree on June 12 by breaking into a Fairy Meadow workwear shop and stealing $4,065 worth of stock. A month later he hit a Bankstown Myer store, walking out with $688.95 in designer clothing.
Just days after that theft, on July 20, he walked into Wollongong Police Station with three large duffel bags containing all the stolen goods. Police later found thousands of dollars' worth of Lego, more clothing, and tools in his car and home.
Court documents said Nicholls was driven by financial hardship, methamphetamine addiction, and a desire to prove he could commit crime. The judge noted his decision to hand himself in was significant and worked in his favour.
Nicholls was sentenced to nine months' jail, backdated to account for time already served on remand, with a non-parole period of five months.
