Teen handed suspended sentence for rape in ACT
An 18-year-old has been convicted of rape and given a fully suspended 18-month sentence by an ACT court.
An 18-year-old man was sentenced on Tuesday to 18 months in jail, fully suspended, after pleading guilty to rape. The ACT Supreme Court heard he was 16 when he met an 18-year-old woman at a Canberra house party in mid-2025 and asked her for a walk.
The teenager and woman consensually kissed, but he then assaulted her repeatedly for about 20 minutes as she said "Please stop, I don't want this" and blocked her access to her phone. Justice Andrew Muller noted the teen's other concerning behaviour, including punching a student at school and photographing another student in a toilet.
The judge took into account the teen's young age, low risk of reoffending, and recent arrival in Australia when deciding on the suspended term.
