Family rescued from floodwater under Melbourne bridge as record rain continues
Family of four rescued from rising floodwater beneath York Street bridge after record October rainfall struck Melbourne.
A couple and their two children were pulled to safety from floodwaters under the York Street bridge in South Melbourne on Thursday afternoon. Two cars had become trapped as flash floods swept through the area.
Police arrived and rescued everyone in both vehicles. No injuries were reported.
That day the SES answered more than 120 calls for help as heavy rain fell across Melbourne, mostly in Malvern and Port Phillip. Several areas recorded about 35 millimetres of rain in a single day.
This was nearly half of October's average monthly rainfall. The Bureau of Meteorology warned that more rain and storms would continue through Saturday.
The SES is now alerting residents across 18 river catchments in north-east Victoria, Gippsland and central Victoria. They must prepare for minor to moderate flooding.
