Nearly 300 NSW GPs now trained to diagnose and treat ADHD
Almost 300 NSW GPs can diagnose and prescribe ADHD medication, cutting wait times from months to weeks.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park announced the rollout on Wednesday. Almost 300 GPs have completed endorsed prescriber training.
Patients can now see a trained GP within days or weeks instead of waiting many months for a specialist appointment. The new assessments use longer GP consultations rather than standard short visits.
GPs receive support from specialist psychiatrists and paediatricians via the Virtual Psychiatry Hub and Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. The government will fund up to 2500 free ADHD assessments.
This could save eligible patients up to $1500 yearly in out-of-pocket costs. A further 300 GPs are expected to begin training next month.
Locations for endorsed prescribers will be listed on Healthdirect from next month.
