Ford Fathom electric ute succeeds Falcon as new competitor
Ford announces the Fathom, an electric ute engineered for right-hand drive. It will launch when orders start early next year.
Ford's global CEO Jim Farley has announced the Fathom, a four-door five-seater electric ute engineered as Ford's response to increased international competition. The Fathom will launch as a combined ute around the size of Ford's Maverick.
It uses a new Universal EV Platform made for flexibility and low cost. Despite its styling, it is not a ladder-frame pick-up.
It is a monocoque ute instead. The platform has a flat skateboard framework.
It includes an integrated lithium-iron-phosphate battery module. This gives extra strength and better packaging.
The Fathom name is already registered in Australia. Its design is engineered for right-hand drive.
This suggests a possible local launch. Ford plans van, passenger car and crossover versions.
