Fifty public bins get collection baskets in bid to cut landfill waste

Warrnambool adds open-top baskets to 50 public bins to help people collect containers for the 10-cent deposit scheme.

Warrnambool residents who collect bottles and cans for the 10-cent refund will soon find the job much easier. The council is installing baskets on the side of 50 public bins across the city within the next few weeks.

The baskets let people deposit containers or pull them out to claim their refund, making it simpler than waiting to collect a full load. The trial runs for three months and could become permanent if it works well.

Warrnambool council received a $4000 state government grant to fund the program. Mayor Ben Blain said it would help keep containers out of landfill and support community groups doing the rounds.

Why it mattersIt makes recycling more convenient and could divert thousands of containers from rubbish tips while giving residents an easy way to earn cash.

AustraliaFor Warrnambool residents, this means easier access to deposit refunds; more broadly, it shows how councils are using the Victorian container deposit scheme (in place since 2023) to reduce landfill.
