Single pothole damages nine cars on Midland Highway near Ballarat

A pothole on the Midland Highway between Elaine and Clarendon damaged at least nine cars during heavy rain on Saturday.

Drivers were stranded on the side of the Midland Highway on Saturday after a single pothole damaged at least nine cars. Heavy rain fell across Ballarat.

At least 40 millimetres of rain fell. Vehicles hit the hole near Courts Road on a sharp bend in a 100 kilometre per hour zone.

One tyre technician responded that afternoon and repaired four cars. He then witnessed five others with damage from the same pothole.

Road crews had to make emergency repairs. Damaged cars sat on the shoulder.

The highway stretch between Elaine and Clarendon is littered with similar potholes. Drivers report sharp-edged holes that could wreck rims.
