George Stevens joins Tasmania as first active AFL player to commit
George Stevens, a 21-year-old delisted Geelong midfielder, has committed to Tasmania's expansion AFL team ahead of its 2028 arrival.
Stevens will play for the Devils in the VFL next season before joining their inaugural AFL list. Stevens is the first known active AFL player to commit to the new club.
At Geelong, Stevens played just two AFL games each year. Stevens was a joint winner of the VFL's JJ Liston Trophy and averaged 30 disposals and 13 goals per game in the reserves.
Stevens's move is backed by Nigel Lappin, a longtime Geelong development coach. Lappin is now a key recruit for Tasmania's AFL coaching staff.
Stevens joins eight pre-listed teenagers already on Tasmania's books. The group is moving to the state next month.
