Jeffrey Archer dies at home days before book launch

Jeffrey Archer, who wrote Kane and Abel and other bestsellers selling 300 million copies, has died at 86 at his home.

Jeffrey Archer, the bestselling author and former Conservative politician, died peacefully at his home on Monday between writing sessions, his publisher HarperCollins said. Archer wrote Kane and Abel, which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and remains one of the best-selling books ever.

Archer's death came one day before the launch of his final novel, Adam and Eve. Archer had spent 14 years on the Sunday Times bestseller list and five years on the New York Times list.

Archer served as a Conservative MP for five years and later as party deputy chairman, but his political career ended in disgrace when he was imprisoned for four years for perjury and perverting the course of justice in a 1987 libel case.
