Speed limit to drop on Wiggs Lane after traffic surge from highway slowdown
Moyne Shire Council is applying to reduce Wiggs Lane's speed limit from 100kmh to 80kmh after increased traffic and accidents.
When the Hopkins Highway speed limit was cut to 80kmh in August, drivers began using Wiggs Lane as a shortcut to avoid the slower stretch. Traffic and accidents on Wiggs Lane have risen since then, with cars leaving the road and hitting fences.
Resident Barry Brown said he had seen a number of minor accidents on the lane since traffic increased, including cars hitting his neighbour's fence. In response, Moyne Shire Council has started applying to the Department of Transport and Planning to lower the speed limit to 80kmh on Wiggs Lane, between Wangoom and Spring Flat roads.
Mayor Jordan Lockett said the council heard community concerns and acted quickly.
