Striker Riley Smith returns to Australia Championship after broken leg
Riley Smith returned to play after a year recovering from a badly broken leg, helping Broadmeadow Magic qualify for the national championship.
Riley Smith broke his tibial plateau, the bone just under the knee, in a collision during a match in June 2025 and was told it would take 12 months before he could return to football. Smith spent three months unable to weight bear, in a brace and on crutches, then spent months building strength back up.
The injury meant he missed Broadmeadow Magic's third consecutive premiership campaign and last year's inaugural Australia Championship. Smith played a full 90 minutes in Magic's opening match this week against APIA, a 1-1 draw they won on penalty shootout.
The club, based in Newcastle, now faces competition heavyweights Avondale in Melbourne. Magic's coach Jim Cresnar praised Smith's commitment and work ethic throughout the long recovery.
