Resident Evil film set with director Zach Cregger after 30 years
Filmmaker Zach Cregger will direct the next Resident Evil film for the zombie horror franchise.
Director Zach Cregger is taking the helm of the upcoming Resident Evil film. The horror franchise has dominated games, films and books for three decades.
The Resident Evil empire has grossed nearly $US13 billion across all media. This includes nine main video games, dozens of spin-offs, six films, novels and stage plays.
The franchise began in 1996 when creator Shinji Mikami and mentor Tokuro Fujiwara set out to make a new kind of horror game. They added an inventory system with scarce resources, a health monitoring system, and heavy emphasis on gore and scares.
Mikami coined the term "survival horror" to describe the genre. The original game sold more than 4 million copies by late 1996.
It became PlayStation's highest-grossing title at the time.
