Kingston Oval finally gets $1.1 million upgrade after 25 years
Work has begun on a $1.1 million restoration of Kingston Oval in Canberra, backed by the ACT Government and AFL NSW/ACT.
Kingston Oval in Canberra's inner south has started a major overhaul after local AFL and cricket clubs spent 25 years pushing for it. The Eastlake Football Club considers the oval its spiritual home but hasn't hosted a first-grade game there since the late 1980s because facilities had deteriorated so badly.
The upgrade will improve the playing surface, fix the irrigation system, and add new lighting for late-night training and games. AFL NSW/ACT committed $400,000 in 2023, and the ACT Government added $700,000.
Club leaders expect the playing surface to be ready before the 2027 football season. Future work will focus on improving facilities off the field.
